Establishment of Anchor Center
Pakistan's Nuclear Medicine, Oncology, and Radiotherapy Institute (NORI), located in Islamabad, has been designated an "Anchor Centre" under the International Atomic Energy Agency's (IAEA) "Rays of Hope initiative".
Established in 1983 by the Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission (PAEC), NORI Hospital was the first dedicated cancer treatment facility in Islamabad, providing both diagnostic and therapeutic services. Serving a population of over 18 million people and attracting patients from across Pakistan and abroad, NORI has become a beacon of hope for those battling cancer.
As one of the nineteen cancer hospitals operated by PAEC, NORI is a 180-bed tertiary care facility specifically designed for diagnosing and treating cancer patients in the capital city. Its extensive catchment area includes Islamabad, the Rawalpindi division, Mandi Bahauddin district, Sargodha division, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) province, Azad Jammu and Kashmir, and Gilgit-Baltistan, encompassing a population of approximately 62.8 million, as per the 2017 Census. NORI stands out as the only fully equipped tertiary care cancer hospital in Islamabad, offering a wide range of modern diagnostic and treatment services. With the support of the Planning Commission of Pakistan through its PSDP program, the hospital has acquired state-of-the-art equipment, enabling it to deliver cutting-edge care. Over the years, the number of new cancer patients registered at NORI has significantly increased, rising from fewer than 3,000 in 2007 to over 9,000 in 2022, reflecting its pivotal role in addressing the growing burden of cancer in the region.
